Cocktail Spotlight: The Sazerac

Seeing as how this Sunday is one of OUR personal favorite holidays of the year, and since the game is being played in the exciting city of New Orleans, we thought we would bring you the Official New Orleans cocktail this weekend, The Sazerac!  If you are like us you will be mixing a few of these and wishing you were at the game!

The Sazerac
Prep time: 3 Minutes – Serves: 1

  • 3 oz rye whiskey
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • Peychaud bitters to taste
  • absinthe or absinthe substitute
  • Lemon twist for garnish

  1. Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice and letting it sit while preparing the rest of the drink.
  2. In a separate mixing glass, muddle the simple syrup and Peychaud bitters together.
  3. Add the rye whiskey and ice to the bitters mixture and stir.
  4. Discard the ice in the chilled glass and rinse it with absinthe by pouring a small amount into the glass, swirling it around and discarding the liquid.
  5. Strain the whiskey mixture from the mixing glass into the old fashioned glass.
  6. Garnish with a lemon twist. Traditionalists will say that the lemon twist should be squeezed over the drink to release its essences but that the twist should not be dropped into the glass itself.

Hotel Spotlight: St. Regis Deer Valley

St Regis Hotel

While at the Sundance Film Festival this year, we decide to take a short drive up the mountain into Deer Valley to the perfect St. Regis Resort.

We valet at the base and take a comfortable, plush, glass enclosed funicular up the mountain side with views of the ski areas above and Park City below. Exiting the funicular we hear a conversation from some film makers, “So great, send me your materials and I will read your script.”  It sounded genuine in this idyllic setting and I believe it was. The doors to the upper lobby are graciously opened for us by a passing staff member who stops to attend.

After pausing on the terrace to see the heated pools steaming amidst the snow….

…and perusing the menus at the J&G Grill restaurant and The Bar Restaurant, we then proceed downstairs to an absolutely divine lobby area with a dark green Bentley nonchalantly parked adjacent to the main couches. No, seriously, there’s a beautiful Bentley on show in this Swiss-lodge-like-lobby amidst an expansive central fireplace, with lovely places to lounge surrounding it.

We decide to have lunch upstairs at the bar by a sunny window, while watching the skiers glide down the mountain.

This is Park City at its best.

Sitting down in a beautiful sunny corner table we start our lunch. The chef accommodates our particular dietary foibles and the rest is history…

In Utah’s gated community of Deer Crest – on the aspen-covered slopes of the Wasatch Mountains – lies The St. Regis Deer Valley. This complex occupies two swaths of land and is connected by a dual-car rail tram to a lower lodge. It includes slope-side residences, condominium suites, and 181 custom-designed rooms. Unwind in the split-level heated infinity swimming pool, at the 13,000-square-foot Remède™ Spa, or with the services of a bespoke St. Regis Butler.

Hotel Spotlight: The Epic Miami

Downtown Miami has made a lot of changes in the last 10 years, and one of them was putting in a stellar, and aptly named, new hotel.

The Epic Miami, a Kimpton Property, shares a luxury highrise with Epic residences, and overlooks Biscayne Bay, the Miami River and the entire city skyline. Each room boasts a gorgeous view from the over-sized balcony, and bathrooms with soaking tubs and extra large steam showers.

London’s famed Zuma sits along the Miami River on the first floor, and the hotel’s own restaurant, Area 31, is perched on the 16th floor with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the entire city. So, whether you want Japanese, or cocktails and small bites by the pool, you have options…

If you are there for relaxation, try the Exhale Spa for a specialty massage. Not in the mood for the spa? Try a cabana by the pool on the 16th floor with unparalleled views. Considering all that is within this property, you really do not have to leave. But, it IS Miami, so when you do feel like you need to get out, just walk out the door and you are in the heart of it all.

Spotlight on Luxury: Holiday 2012

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?” ~Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas
